AI-assisted data ecosystem for rare cancers at Vitalis 2025
25 June / 2024
PRESS RELEASE | IDEA4RC, an EU-funded project, will participate in Vitalis 2025, the Nordic region’s leading conference and trade fair on the future of healthcare. The project aims to establish an intelligent data ecosystem for rare cancers to facilitate the reuse of existing health-related data from different sources.
Rare cancer is a collective term for a large number of tumours, each of which is uncommon but together account for about 20 percent of all cancers. As each individual type of tumour is rare, the experience and knowledge of healthcare providers is limited. This, in turn, reduces the quality of care available to patients and their caregivers. One way to increase the quality of care is to organize healthcare services into reference centres, but this alone is not sufficient. It is crucial to make information available across hospitals and national borders.
IDEA4RC brings together a wide range of experts and organisations from across Europe covering clinical management of rare cancers, multilingual language models, and state-of-the-art data security and data protection to develop an IT infrastructure that permits the sharing and reuse of health data between clinical centres in Europe. The aim is to promote research into rare cancers to ultimately improve patients’ clinical management and outcome.
Through IDEA4RC, we can expect a significant shift in care for patients with rare cancers. The project enables better understanding of rare cancers and support clinical decision making which is crucial for the well-being of patients.
IDEA4RC’s data ecosystem exploits a federated data analytics approach, empowering researchers and healthcare professionals to leverage insights that were previously inaccessible while protecting the individual patient’s data.
At Vitalis 2025, IDEA4RC will present both an Opening keynote on May 19 and a conference track on May 21.
“We are proud to present our AI-assisted data ecosystem for the first time more broadly. This is an important step towards improving care for patients with rare cancers. IDEA4RC’s data ecosystem is groundbreaking and will revolutionize the way we manage health data. By participating in Vitalis, we can discuss challenges and opportunities to improve the care of patients with rare diseases with other key actors at the conference. In this way, we hope for a broader implementation of our results.” – Andreas Muth, Md, PhD, Head of the Department of Surgery Sahlgrenska, Sahlgrenska University Hospital, and responsible for IDEA4RC in Sweden.
“IDEA4RC’s participation at Vitalis helps disseminate completed work and research to a larger audience of experts, decision-makers and technology providers in healthcare. Engaging with other stakeholders at the conference can favour the widespread implementation of the project’s results and the faster translation of research findings into tangible benefits for patients.” – Hans Almvide, Conference manager Vitalis.
