Description
Did you know?
Hospital patients in need of help have to pull an alarm cord - or, if placed in the corridor, ring a physical bell(!).
Patients are unable to specify what they need. For healthcare staff, this results in frequent interruptions, unnecessary walking, and difficult prioritization; a request for coffee is treated with the same urgency as an acute situation. This creates stress, inefficient use of time, and can impact patient safety.
Luckily we have Pling!
Pling is a communication platform that allows patients to send specific requests directly to healthcare staff via their own smartphone or a tablet. Patients access the service through a SMS link or by scanning a personal QR-code. Pling also includes internal communication tools, enabling staff to call and chat within the platform.
The solution gives healthcare professionals immediate insight into patient needs before responding, enabling better prioritization, coordination, and task allocation. The goal is to shift time away from interruptions and unnecessary logistics toward direct patient care.
Why Pling?
The healthcare sector is facing a growing crisis, with an estimated shortage of 2.3 million nurses in the EU by 2030. At the same time, existing resources are not used efficiently.
In 2024, we conducted a 30-hour observational study at a hospital ward at Oslo University Hospital. The results showed that healthcare staff spend approximately 37 minutes per shift on unnecessary walking related to the current alarm system, equivalent to nearly one full-time position per ward.
Pling helps take this valuable time back.
